Roderick “Rod” James Akui, 70, of Hilo died Aug. 25 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was employed at Big Island Toyota. Celebration of life noon Saturday (Oct. 7) at Carlsmith Beach Park. Casual attire. Survived by daughter, Rachel Ann Napualani Akui of Ainaloa; son, Keolamaikeakua (Lola) Akui of Hilo; sister, Cynthia DeCoito of Hilo; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Lu “Lulu” Kahunani Cristobal, 92, of Hilo died Aug. 31 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Kurtistown, she was a retired bakery clerk for KTA Super Stores Puainako, worked at the former Sheraton Volcano House, the former Sheraton Waiakea Village Resort and the former Kress Store Fountain and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Kilauea 1st Ward. Visitation 9-10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Alae Cemetery. Casual attire. Melvin Kwock Chew Loo, 71, of Hilo, died Aug. 29 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he was the owner of Mel’s Equipment & Parts and was a member of the Born Losers and Sportsman golf clubs. Faith Ayako Miyashiro, 82, of Hilo died Sept. 12 in Hilo. Born in Honolulu, she was a retired secretary for Nelson Fukuhara State Farm Insurance. Private services held. Gilbert Masaichi Nakayama, 86, of Kealakekua died June 21 at home. Born in Kealakekua, Hawaii, He was a school bus driver for Roberts Hawaii and Yamaguchi Transportation and retired U.S. Army veteran. No services.
